Sewing and Shit

What the Hell have I been Doing? - I lost count of the weeks. But I have an update!

My 80% check-in for the BlizzCon cosplay contest was due this weekend. And I made my submission!

I had to hustle to get it to a state that was wearable. They were not expecting you to be finished. But they were expecting a video taken outside to show your progress.

Which means I needed it done enough to go out in public. And that I did.

⭐ This Week’s Focus

Challenge Item - Getting everything done enough

Other - Yeah just do all the shit

Since this post is a little different as I got off track, I’m organizing it by piece of the costume.

🗡️ Blade of the Black Empire

Blade lit

Status - After some magnet mishaps (because I am impatient…always wait for the glue to dry before wielding) I now need to redo my magnets.

  • Also need to add a resistor because the blade turns off after 30 seconds, due to the battery having issues with the low power draw. I don’t understand the electronics 100% but that’s what I will try.

  • Need to add a wrap to the handle.

  • The paint chipped while at the renaissance faire so I need to touch that up and give it a good seal.

Blade primer Even with just primer, the Blade looks sick as fuck.

Light works Testing out the pogo connectors before soldering or gluing anything. Smart.

Spike test After reading the BlizzCon rules about spikes, I emailed them a picture to make sure I would be compliant. I ended up rounding the spikes a bit. Honestly, the inner spikes by my hand were too spiky anyways.

Blade reprint This time, the blade halves needed to be printed in half so they would fit on the 3D printer. I did my best to cover up the seam.

Blade working Extra long wires so I can’t fuck it up again!

Blade connector This is my pic to remember where each wire goes.

👗 Dress

Dress decals

Status - Acceptable as-is. Some improvements include:

  • Extend the bottom hem a tiny bit and add the bronze trim.

  • Add the bronze decorations to the back that I laser cut.

Cape snap I made it easy for a handler to snap in my cape (and a little less difficult for me to do on my own).

🎀 Corset

Corset done

Status - It works. Some tiny things can be improved.

  • There’s a pocket behind each flap. I didn’t realize until after the ren faire that the pocket opening should come from the side, not the top. You know, liek a regular pants pocket or jacket pocket.

  • The velcro holding on that decoration piece might need to be reglued.

  • If I have time, I would like to give the corset a paint job like the pauldrons. Show it some love.

  • Because I ran out of time, I hot glued the purple flap. Making it velcro would be much better.

  • The purple sash along the bottom is far too short. Double it’s length.

Corset redo Did my best to fill in the seams.

🔮 Orbs

Orb screen

Status - Well, I have a screen and it plays an orb. I had to go to Voidstorm, screen capture one of the MANY orbs in the game (I took one from the Voidspire for dramatic effect), and transfer it to a micro SD card. And it worked!

  • I’ll need to 3D print a shell to hold it in.

  • Also work on the fiber optic spinning lights.

  • Figure out a battery source (probably going to be under the dress, not in each orb).

  • Shape the rods.

  • And more!

Harness board This removable board is sewn onto the harness and it’s what the rods are going to connect to.

💄 Makeup

Tattoo test

Status - I got over my airbrush anxiety (YAY!), learned how to use the Cricut Joy2 (the perfect little purchase for my use case), made a stencil and it worked!

  • The dark lipstick isn’t what I will wear. I only wore it to the renaissance faire because the other lipstick that I used looked weird with this new shade of purple.

  • If I can figure out how to get alcohol liquid makeup to work, that would be AMAZING. This stuff was good, but for the rest of my body, alcohol would last longer.

Makeup after After a day at the renaissance faire, my makeup was better than I expected. I didn’t expect the lipstick to last. Dark lipstick never does. That’s why I will find another shade that will work with me.

Let me just add that I was very impressed with how my eyebrows and ears held up, despite them smacking everything as I drove. I was not prepared for that annoyance.

CON CRUNCH CONTINUES….
